In Loving Memory
Coach Luis Herrera

Luis Alberto Herrera was born on Thursday, June 25, 1970 to Heriberto and Martha Herrera at Bronx Lebanon Hospital. Raised in the Castle Hill section of the Bronx, Lou was educated at PS 138, PS 174, PS 131 and Adlai E. Stevenson HS, where he was always the class comedian.
Lou loved hanging out with his siblings Cecil and Evelyn. He often joked about going to bed fully dressed and sneaking out of the house with Cecil to go parties. He enjoyed sparring with Evelyn through daily phone calls which usually always started with “SHUTUP” instead of the traditional “hello”. He would light up any time Cecil and Evelyn would call, but would beam with joy every time he spoke with his mother whom he lovingly called, “Shorty”. He never ended a phone call with her without saying, “I love you Mama”.
As a child, he met his “brother from another” Mike and they shared many dreams, experiences and laughs. You rarely saw one without the other. They made it a habit to play basketball on the weekends. Lou marveled at Mike’s prowess on the court and bragged, “I taught that boy everything he knows!” Lou introduced Mike to his love Amanda, and became Godfather/Uncle to their son Courtney.
Lou’s favorite activity was going to Virgin Records on 14th Street to listen to music and unwind. He loved hip-hop and his favorite rappers were Big Daddy Kane, Erik B. & Rakim, and Public Enemy. Lou also loved R&B, old school music and jazz, and often credited his father for introducing him to a variety of music. It was this appreciation of music that inspired him to write and produce his music with Mike.
Lou worked as a Senior Buyer at New York Presbyterian Hospital for many years. He played on the hospital’s basketball team and his love of basketball inspired him to create the “Give and Go” basketball program in the Bronx, where he provided a safe space for young men to play.
In September 2014, he gave his life to the Lord and worked in ministry, finding great joy in attending Bible Study and helping those less fortunate. He collected donations of toiletries, clothing and food which he and Leisa would distribute to the homeless in Penn Station every year. They created SoulPhamm United to provide an outlet for sports and arts for kids in NY and NJ. Inspired by Leisa’s career of coaching kids, it was his dream to coach a boys’ basketball team, a vision Leisa will now carry with an annual basketball tournament lovingly called, “The Ruey Classic” and a memorial team named “Team Orion”.
Luis and Leisa met Super Bowl weekend in 2007 and married on December 13, 2014. They built their lives in Rahway, NJ and were completing the process of becoming foster parents. Lou was excited about fostering and ultimately adopting two sons, but it was being Dad to Rufus and Chaka that he was most proud of. He argued daily with Chaka, who he called, “Man” and chased Rufus who he called “Man Man” and could often be heard yelling, “Get Down” or “Cut It Out” to cats who would do everything but cut it out. He would have loved to know that his cats have more followers on IG than he and Leisa together.
Lou went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 23rd, leaving to celebrate his life: his wife Leisa (Doc); parents Heriberto & Martha; siblings Cecil & Evelyn; nieces Mariya & Brielle; Godmother Verna; Godsister Kimberly (Brian); mother-in-law Zelda; sister-in-law Tiffanie; best friends Michael & Amanda; Godchildren Courtney & Jairus; childhood friends Gary, James, & Allen; special friends Millie, Lisa, Cherise, NeQuan, Tiffany & Brother Joe; cats Rufus & Chaka; & a host of aunts, uncles, cousins & friends too many to name.
